Q and A Corner
How far in advance do I need to order?
In short, I appreciate as much advance notice as possible. Because I am a one-woman operation, I can only make a limited number of cakes per week and reserve dates on a first-come, first-served basis. That said, if you need a cake for a last-minute event, contact me and I will let you know if I can accommodate your request.

How much does a cake cost?
Decorated cakes are generally priced per serving, with the industry standard being 4" x 2" x 1". Because cakes are built to be 4 inches tall, much taller than your "normal" homemade cake, you can cut many servings from each tier!

The question of how much a cake costs boils down to ingredients and time. In general, a buttercream cake is cheaper than a fondant cake. A multi-tiered cake costs more than one that doesn't need extra supports. 3D cakes require a lot of planning and skill and are priced accordingly.

As a point of reference, a vanilla or chocolate cake with a buttercream filling and simple decorations starts at $4.00 a serving. A fondant covered cake with simple decorations is at least $4.50 a serving. There is a $100 minimum order and a $150 minimum on 3D cakes.

Once I learn about your event and the type of cake you are dreaming about, I provide a customized quote.

Do you offer cupcakes?
I will provide them in bulk (at least 8 dozen minis or 3 dozen normal sized cupcakes) or as part of a cake order, with the $100 minimum for the order still applying. Some brides and grooms, for example, prefer to provide a smaller cutting cake and cupcakes rathern than one big cake. Inquire about pricing.

Why are your cakes more expensive than my local grocery store?
A Fancy Pants cake is a labor of love. I use quality ingredients, bake from scratch, and spend thoughtful time on each project. Even a simple-ish cake still takes hours to plan, mix, bake, torte, fill, ice, and decorate.

What is the process of ordering a cake?
1. First, contact me through my contact form (preferred), email fancypantscakesVT@gmail.com, or leave a message at (802) 379-8459. When emailing, please indicate the date, time, and location of your event, the number of people attending, the type of event, and if you have a theme in mind. Feel free to attach pictures of other cakes that have piqued your interest.
2. I will get back to you within 48 hours. After our initial consultation, I will offer you a range of designs and prices specific to your vision.
3. Once we have settled on the design, I will send you a contract to sign and return with a 30% deposit. Payment is accepted through personal check, cash, or credit card.

Do you deliver?
Yes. There is a delivery fee which takes into account time, fuel costs, and any set-up.

Can you make a character cake?
I am sorry, but it is illegal to reproduce and sell any copyrighted logo, character, etc. without permission of the owner. Some owners are happy to give their permission, but others (Disney, for example) are more protective of their characters. Without permission, I can not reproduce that character or logo on the cake.

However, there are ways that we can work with the theme of the party and still obey the law. You are welcome to use your own topper (e.g., a plastic figurine) and the cake can be a scene for the character. Another alternative is to create a cake based around the theme of the party; for example, a multi-tiered cake that matches the colors and dress styles of the Disney Princesses for a princess party. Let's be creative and think outside the box!

What about food allergies?
While a cake may not contain nuts, there are nuts in my kitchen and I can not guarantee a nut-free product. In a similar vein, I can make cakes with gluten-free flours, but since I use all-purpose flour in my kitchen I can not guarantee that there won't be all-purpose flour dust in the batter. I mention this because people have various tolerances to gluten. If you are very sensitive to gluten, I can not safely accommodate your needs. However, if you have cut gluten out of your diet and are looking for a cake option that is not full of all-purpose flour, let's talk.

I can make vegan cakes. Please inquire about other food restrictions (low sugar, low fat, etc.).
